I recently received the opportunity to do a review for the Jawbone Up Band, I had purchased my band from Best Buy back in March of this year. When they contacted me to do a review, I could not refuse. I did a lot of research when I decided to purchase one of the fitness bands. At the time, there were only three to choose from and after reading about each of them and then speaking to people who owned some of them, my decision was an easy one.
I decided that the Jawbone UP lets you – Live Better. The Jawbone Up tracks your sleep activity, steps, calorie intake and more with the Jawbone UP wrist sensor and free mobile app. I love that the UP gives you meaningful, personalized insights so you can make lasting improvements to your everyday life.
The Jawbone Up Band provided more than most of the other fitness tracking options. There is a free app that displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward.
The biggest complaints I heard about it is that it does not have a screen and that you have a small cable that you have to use to plug it in to charge. Most were afraid of losing the small cable. I have not had that issue, however I did attach it to a USB extension cable so that I can charge it while I am working on my computer and not have to remove the band. I love that it holds a charge for about 10 days depending on what alarms you have set and how often you sync. The part of not having a screen was also not an issue for me, it does not take too long for you to plug it into your phone to sync and see where you are as far as progress. I do not even take the band off for that, it is pretty easy to connect while you are wearing the band.
The reasons I decided on the Jawbone Up band is that it tracks your food and beverage intake. You can put in your foods, tell it the calories and it helps to keep track. Once you enter a food, it is there so you just select it the next time and the nutritional information is already there. They have a large amount of foods already in the system so you just scan the bar code on the package and most of what I have eaten is already in there. Every now and then I find a food that is not in there and have to take a moment to enter the calories per serving.
My favorite feature of the Jawbone up is the way it wakes you up to start your day the Smart Alarm. You set the time you want up and have the option of a 30 minute window. Because it the wristband tracks your movement and sleep in the background., it will determine the time that you need to wake up. I set my alarm for 6:30, some days it goes off at 6:00 and others at 6:30 depending on how I slept and when I actually went to sleep. It also wakes you up with a soft vibration which means your partner most likely will never hear it! I have had a couple times where I did end up shutting it off and falling asleep. There is no snooze option as it is supposed to be a more natural way to wake up and start your day. However, there are nights that I am up until 3 or 4 in the morning and turning around and waking up to a small vibration at 6:30 does not workas I am past exhausted. Alarm clocks do not always work for me when I am this tired either. Most mornings it is perfect for me though.
I like that there is a timer you can set and it will let you know if you have been inactive for a while. I had mine set for 30 minutes and did have some issues because it has to be on an arm that is active. Some days I run with a jogging stroller and while I try to alternate hands, I do not always do that. I was a bit frustrated when it went off after I had run 6 miles and told me I had not been moving. I have learned to attach it to my waist when I am running so that I do not lose credit for the most active part of my day. I was impressed because I do have another device I use when I run and it and the Jawbone UP calculate the same distance when I run. I was impressed that it was that accurate. I also loved that I can use both it and my other device for my running. Being that it does not use a bluetooth connection, there is no conflict with the two.
I like that this unit is simple, press the button and hold it in the button one time until the green moon glows to put the band into sleep mode when you wake up, press and hold one time to put into regular mode. Press once then press and hold to put the band into a timed activity when finished, just press and hold the button to put it back into regular mode. Press twice then press and hold to put into Power Nap, when finished, press and hold one time to put it back into regular mode. It sounds like a lot but is actually quite easy to get used to.
You can also team up with friends who have the UP band, I love this part because it lets you see each others progress. There is nothing worse than knowing someone is looking at your results for the day and you sync up to find you only moved 256 steps (I was sick and still hated it!). I knew my partner was going to harass me and it does motivate you to get you moving.
This is a great device to use for your entire well being, UP is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward. Everything you need to track to stay healthy can be done with this app/fitness band.
